"Akasaki Isamu, Amano Hiroshi and Nakamura Shūji acquired the Nobel Prize in physics by Nitrides blue leds this year. Over the past 100 years of the Nobel Prize history, 9 Nobel Prizes have been awarded in the field of semiconductor, 4 in the filed of first general of Silicon-based materials, 4 in the second general of gallium arsenide field, the third general, which is represented by Gallium nitride, for the time being, there is only one. Called for by researcher JinMin Li, the group leader of semiconductor lighting expert group of 863 programm, in the seminar of 2014 nobel prize in physics, held in Capital Normal University.
"In the process to acquire the nobel prize, the spirit of exploring the unknwon world is very important, in addition, there is no doubt that technogical breaktrough of changing the world is also concerned by the evaluation of nobel prize." Li said, "curiosity, imagination and very strong skepticism, espcially the operational ability, are all enlightments given by the nobel prize."
Scientific researchers need to improve their operational ability
The Nobel Prize for physics review committee announced on Oct. 7th in Stockholm, the capital city of Sweden, three Japnese scientists acquired 2014 Nobel Prize for Physics due to their discovery of New energy-saving light source, they would be divided equally bonus of 8 million Swedish krona(approximately USD 1.11 million).
The three winners are 85-year-old Akasaki Isamu, professor from Japan Meijo University, 54-year-old Amano Hiroshi, professor from Nagoya University and 60-yeaar-old Nakamura Shūji, professor from University of California, Santa Barbara.
When analyzing the winners' reasons for winning the Nobel Prize for physics, Li specially emphasized the importance of operational ablility, he thought that Nakamura Shūji's operational ability contributed a lot to his achievement.
"Nakamura Shūji has very strong operational ability, his experimental equipments, including Gap equipment, are all made by himself. He often calls himself a craftsman but a scientist. The role of Nakamura Shūji may be an enlightment to us." Li emphasized.
When using his own equipment to crystallize and breed Gap, Nakamura Shūji is often faced with the danger of frequent quartz tube explosion, which forces him to weld the quartz tube with extra work. As time goes by, Nakamura Shūji is not only well-trained in welding, the equipment made by him can also meet the need of scientific research.
"I started my postgraduate from the establishment of lab, also from the manufacturing of equipment. Nowaday postgraduates share a much better condition than that of us. Now when you come to a research institution or a university, the research conditions are very good. But you till need to mention one point that you should carry out some related technogical equipent transformation work when centring your scientific research. You don't need to start from the scratch, but you still need to make some adjustment." Li said to the students.
China is the most important market for LED application
"The award of three nitride LED foundationer, is based on the contribution of blue LED technology to mankind, and on 20-year extroadinary development of the semiconductor lighting industry. This development is exactly the contribution of our country to the Nobel Prize, whcih is admitted by Nakamura Shūji." reported by Li in the seminar.
Over the past ten years, Nakamura Shūji and other two have come to China almost every year, only because that LED has a vast market in China. In addition, the Recomment Committe of Nobel Prize showe that wide popularization and application of LED will be the precise of getteing the Nobel Prize. Nakamura himself also thinks that China must become the most widely used area of semiconductor application.
"As to domestic semiconductor lighting popularization, in my opinion, YiMou Zhang is supposed to be the first one to commend. Because the opening ceremony of 2008 BeiJing Olympic Games was a best opportunity for LED to demonstrate to the whole world, including the lighting in Bird's Net and Water Tube, as well as the grand spectacle, were all very good publicity of LED; next was the ShangHai World Expo, during this period, LED started its transition from landscape to functionality, that year was also regarded internationally as the first year of LED technology development."
In the past LED was regarded as light industry, which was simply lighting. Now LED is enrolled into electronic products, that is to say LED is based on lighting but surpasses lighting, also is to say that LED has a vast develop room besides lighitng, such as agriculture, and biology.
"The application of LED for agriculture, mainly shows that it can provide large-scale photosynthesis,and then promote the growth of crops."
Plants are just like humanbeing, they also have rhythm, they not really need 24 hours to finish photosynthesis,it is intermittent illumination that can have an effect. But the tradditional lighting way is illuminating all the time, 99% of light is useless, and fluorescent lamp in the greenhouse is hard to be on and off very frequently, but LED can do this well.
"I predict that LED technology have a very great development in agriculture, I don't think it will be inferior to Hybrid Rice Technology of LongPing Yuan." Li said.
