New technology can use wireless network signals to achieve 3D wall imaging

Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, June 24th Often, wall detection requires more specialized equipment. However, the U.S. experts succeeded in realizing the 3D imaging of the partition wall by using ordinary UAVs and wireless network signals in conjunction with specialized algorithms. The technology is expected to be useful in areas such as emergency search and rescue and archaeological exploration.

A recent press release issued by the University of California at Santa Barbara said that with this method, it is possible to draw an internal three-dimensional image of an alien confined space without prior investigation and with high efficiency.

The researchers tested a four-sided wall surrounded by brick-lined areas, about 3 meters long and about 0.5 meters high. They used two UAVs to fly around the target space, one of which continued to send wireless network signals and the other measured the strength of the signals received at different locations.

Because obstacles of different materials and thicknesses lead to different degrees of weakening of wireless network signals, the researchers used specially developed imaging algorithms to process the signal intensity data and draw a high-definition three-dimensional image of the target space. The results show that the images obtained using this method are fairly accurate.
